Japanese Knotweed

A customer recently contacted us regarding riverfront maintenance. Below is the question and our response.

Question:

Will Sonar or your other products eliminate Japanese Knotweed? This invasive is being transported downstream in a riverine environment and attaching itself on the banks where it proliferates.

NL, Harvard, MA

Answer:

Sonar is a systemic option that may give partial control. Sonar is recommended for use in ponds and lakes, but not in rivers or streams.

Aquacide Pellets are a second systemic option designed for use early spring as new growth begins to sprout, in areas with little water flow.  For best results, apply Aquacide Pellets at the rate of 10 lbs. per 2,500 sq. ft. (50' x 50').  Repeat treatment may be needed 3-5 weeks after the first application to kill the entire root system.

Aqua Neat and Shore-Klear Liquid are a third systemic option. This option is designed for use on terrestrial and emersed weeds with 50% or more of the foliage above the water surface, including all varieties of Knotweed. For best results, mix 2 oz. of Aqua Neat or Shore-Klear Liquid with enough water to make 1 gallon of solution and top with 1 oz. of Cygnet Plus Liquid (surfactant). One gallon of solution will treat 1,000 sq. ft. (100’ x 10’) to 1,600 sq. ft. (100’ x 16’) one time. Repeat treatment 3-5 weeks after the first application if the weeds begin to show signs of recovery.
